Alejandro Amenábar s’ha convertit en els darrers vint i cinc anys en una figura clau del cinema espanyol. Va néixer a Santiago de Xile tot i què un any després es va traslladar a Madrid amb els seus pares pel cop d’estat d’Augusto Pinochet. Va créixer entre dues cultures, fet, que el va donar una sèrie de referències i vivències que es veuen reflectides a la seva filmografia. Tot i això, sempre s’ha declarat com un ciutadà espanyol tot i que no descarta tornar al seu país natal per rodar pel·lícules o series sobre les atrocitats de la dictadura xilena.

Des de petit ha estat un apassionat de les imatges i un dels seus passatemps preferits ha estat el de jugar amb les cintes de vídeo que hi havia per casa. La seva pel·lícula preferida és 2001: una odissea a l’espai de Kubrick on va descobrir un gran interès per les imatges i la música. Amb el temps va destacar en la composició i toca alguns instruments com el piano o la guitarra. Ha realitzat la majoria de bandes sonores de les seves pel·lícules i en moments d’aturades de rodatges ha realitzats composicions per a films d’altres directors.

Als anys noranta cursa estudis d’imatge i so a la Universitat Complutense de Madrid que compaginava amb els seus primers projectes de realitzador. Tot i això va abandonar els estudis per una assignatura de realització i a conseqüència del seu èxit com a creador de curtmetratges. Les seves cintes van despertar la curiositat de nombrosos productors i directors espanyols com el català Bigas Luna. Però, sense cap mena de dubte, va ser la pel·lícula Tesis del 1996 que el va portar al reconeixement unànime tant del públic com de la critica. A partir d’aquí, va iniciar una ascendent carrera comercial que el va posicionar entre els millors directors de cinema espanyol del moment.

A això van ajudar les candidatures als premis Goya o els premis del cinema europeu. L’any següent la pel·lícula Abre los ojos, amb un pressupost més ambiciós i actors ja instaurats al cinema com Penélope Cruz el van catapultar a l’esfera americana i Hollywood es va interessar pels seus projectes. Tot i que la segona part “a l’americana” no va tenir el mateix èxit que la primera aquests anys li van servir pel llançament internacional amb el reconeixement a d’altres festivals com Sundance, Cannes o Berlín.

Amb la pel.lícula Los Otros treballa amb actrius de la talla de Nicole Kidman en una cinta de suspens que fou pionera per ser el primer cas  d’una coproducció a la industria espanyola d’aquestes magnituds. En aquesta pel·lícula podem veure una de les influències més clares de la filmografia d’Alejandro Amenábar, el cinema de Hitchcock. Aquesta pel·lícula suposa la seva consolidació cinematogràfica amb un gran èxit comercial. Darrerament, l’any 2004 Amenábar fa un acostament a la temàtica de la mort i tot allò que gira al seu voltant amb la pel·lícula Mar adentro. D’una o altra manera la mort sempre havia estat lligada a la seva filmografia però en aquesta cinta ho podem veure d’una manera més evident.

Aquesta pel·lícula el porta a un punt d’inflexió a la seva carrera amb l’entrega de 14 premis Goya, un Globus d’Or i l’òscar a millor pel·lícula de parla no anglesa. Els darrers anys ha fet d’altres títols destacables compaginant-ho amb la composició de bandes sonores per a d’altres directors. Àgora (2009) Regresión (2015) o Mientras dure la guerra (2019) han estat alguns dels seus títols més celebrats els darrers anys. Tot i això ha realitzat algunes series per a televisió com La Fortuna, de l’any 2021, i ha col·laborat en l’elaboració d’alguns guions.
