Pedro Almodóvar és un director, productor i guionista del cinema espanyol de major projecció internacional. Almodóvar es va convertir en una figura important al cinema espanyol durant la dècada dels anys vuitanta amb d’altres pel·lícules com: “Laberinto de pasiones” (1982), “¿Que he hecho yo para merecer esto?” (1984), “Matador” (1986) o “La Ley del deseo” (1987). De fet, va ser després de filmar aquestes pel·lícules que va decidir muntar la seva pròpia productora, El Deseo S.A, i començar una trajectòria d’èxit comercial que el van portar a convertir-se en el màxim referent internacional del cinema espanyol dels anys vuitanta i noranta.

Tot i això, l’èxit internacional va venir de la mà del film de l’any 1988 “Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios” que va otorgar-li l’aplaudiment de critica i públic arreu del món. Aquesta pel·lícula va ser nominada a l’Óscar a millor pel·lícula internacional i va recollir d’altres premis internacionals. Però no va ser fins el 1999 i l’any 2002 que no va guanyar l’Óscar a millor pel·lícula estrangera i millor guió original per “Todo sobre mi madre” i “Hable con ella”, respectivament.

A més a més de dirigir, Almodóvar ha escrit la majoria dels seus guions, sovint, inspirant-se en la seva pròpia vida i en les històries que ha conegut durant la seva infantesa i la seva activitat a Madrid. Durant els darrers anys Pedro Almodóvar ha continuat fent cintes tan de drama com de comèdia arribant a fer una autobiografia a la pel·lícula “Dolor y Gloria” del 2019 que explorava la creativitat, memòria i vellesa de l’artista. Aquest fet, va suposar la seva coronació com a director de cinema amb més premis Goya, un total de set. Tanmateix, ha estat reconegut amb quatre premis Bafta, cinc premis de l’Acadèmia del Cinema Europeu o el Premi Princesa d’Astúries de les Arts.
